Why does Marisa Peer use regression when it is know that it can instill false memories?

  • Not sure who Marisa Peer is and I won’t claim to answer for her but here’s my two cents on the issue of false memories and regressions:
  • Regression is a therapeutic tool whose value lies in the fact that memories are changeable. All memories are false and that fact does not negate their pathological effects or otherwise on real life. The value of regressions lies in the resolution of emotional charge from a causative memory. This can be done by reframing the memory or altering it and changing it altogether.
  • The whole point of a regression is to change a memory; or in effect to install a false memory!
  • False memories are only a problem when they result in false accusations and unnecessary negative emotional and behavioral consequences for the client. They are not evil in and of themselves .
  • For example someone who was abused by a parent can use regression to revisit that memory and change it so he or she remembers that adult doing something positive instead; or even bringing in an older self into the memory to protect or counsel the child.
  • All memories are false! That in and of itself is not enough of an argument against using regressions. The fact of the matter is that the stories our clients give us are not necessarily true but they always hint at the emotional pattern that causes pathology.
  • This is an understanding every ethical therapist would benefit from: focus on the context not on the content!
  • In conclusion; Marisa Peer probably uses regression because she knows how to. I can only assume she uses it to do good for her clients.
